How to Include Your Dog in Your Engagement Session

Chances are, if you own a dog they are family. Regardless of what anyone says.
Maybe your best friend has been there since before you met your significant other, or perhaps they were excitedly waiting for your arrival from your first date together. They were there for you since the beginning of your love story, so why not have them by your side when you announce your engagement to world?

Consult with your photographer...
Always make arrangements with your photographer prior to including your dog in the session. As professionals, they may have additional ideas on how to pose, alternate locations, etc. Whatever the case may be, it's always ideal to be on the same page with anyone you're working with.
Location, location, location!
If your dog is the type to easily get distracted, you may not want to be posing near a lake filled with ducks and geese. It is always important to check with the park prior to scheduling the session in case there are any regulations you may need to follow, or permits you may need to purchase.
Bring a trusted friend to dog-sit...
Although you'll want your dog in tons of different shots, poses and outfits, he won't be participating the entire time. When it's time for a break, you can't expect your photographer to hold the leash and the lens. Bring a trusted friend who is comfortable and familiar with your dog so that you may comfortably continue the session without interruption.
Be prepared...
No matter how well trained your mutt may be, the outdoors can be unpredictable. Bring extra treats to ensure they'll stay in place during a difficult shot. Dogs like to claim their territory so always have additional plastic bags and napkins to pick up any waste, as well as a water bowl to make sure they don't dehydrate.
Tire him out before the session...
It might be nice to bring the dog to the park a good 20 minutes before the session to allow them to familiarize themselves with their surroundings, use the bathroom, and tire themselves out. That way, they aren't restless during the session, but rather resting and posing next to you.
Have fun!
You are having a unique and fun engagement session with two of the most important individuals in your life. Bring some props to have a variety of images to choose from for your announcement or save the dates. Some items we have seen are a baseball, a small sign around the collar or a chalk board with the wedding date written on it.
Engagement sessions are a great way to get comfortable in front of the lens, as well as with your photographer. Not only is it the best way to practice posing for the big day, but after viewing the images, you'll know your best angles and feel even more confident and excited for your wedding day photos.
